Foxtail palm is native to a very small area of northeastern Queensland, Australia, but has been widely cultivated around the world. It is a single-stemmed palm growing to a height of 6 to 15 m tall and up to 25 cm diameter. Smooth lightly grey trunk, bottle- or spindle-shaped, marked by annular leaf scars. There are about 6–10 fronds in the crown of a mature tree, growing up to 3 m in length. This palm species is monoecious carrying flowers on a panicle. Fruit is a drupe, orange-red when ripe, containing a single large seed coated in a hard but fibrous, black mesocarp.
