Mahogany is native to the broader Caribbean bioregion and grown as a plantation tree. It is listed as " Near Threatened" under IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is a medium-sized semi-evergreen tree growing to 30–35 metres tall. The leaves are pinnate; there is no terminal leaflet. Small flowers produced in panicles; fruits are woody capsules containing numerous winged seeds.
- Mahagony is sold in timber markets in Kerala and used in the construction of yachts, launches, motorboats, and small boats of various kinds.
- In large ships its use is confined largely to interior trim, panelling, and furniture.
