The native range of Lagerstroemia speciosa is China to Tropical Asia. It is a deciduous tree and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome, growing to 15 metres tall, with an attractive symmetrical crown, bright pink to light purple flowers. The leaves are simple, deciduous, oval to elliptic with stout petiole. The fruits are ellipsoid or sub-globose woody capsules.  It is recognised as the state flower of the state of Maharashtra.

  • The plant is an ornamental tree. 
  • Its timber is next only to teak in its strength.
  • The seeds are narcotic, bark and leaves are used for the preparation of herbal formulations.
