Gulmohar is a medium-sized deciduous tree, native to Madagascar. Gulmohar grows to about 10 m. The foliage of one branch is made of 8–25 or more pairs of pinnae, flowers large, appear in corymbs along and at the ends of branches. The seeds are small. The compound leaves have a feathery appearance and are a characteristic colour of light, bright green. When young, the pods are green and flaccid and then turn dark-brown and woody as they mature.
- It is grown as an ornamental tree and also a useful shade tree in tropical conditions.
