Oil palm is native to west and southwest Africa, grows to 20 m height. Leaves pinnate (3-5 m) and mature palm over 10 years produce about 20 leaves a year. Flowers are produced in dense clusters. Fruits are reddish coloured and grows in large bunches. Fruits are made up of oily fleshy outer layer called pericarp with a single seed or palm kernel, also rich in oil.
